Skin Care Basics

>> Thursday, March 11

Slightly alarmed by the tiny wrinkles that I have seen gradually develop on my face, I decided to read up on skin care. I wanted to find out what products are available to decrease the amount of fine lines and wrinkles as well as to prevent future but inevitable wrinkles. Growing up in a tropical country, my childhood was filled with weekend long trips to the beach and sun-filled hot and humid summers.
After reading several books on skin care, here are the conclusions I have come up with:

The best way to maintain beautiful glowing skin is simple in theory:
1. Drink a lot of water
2. Get at least 8 hours of sleep a day.
3. Exercise.
4. Use sunscreen.

That's it. No magical lotion, no exotic expensive cure. These 4 tenets of course, are not only essential for beautiful skin but also good for your body's general well being.

I discovered a terrific book on natural skin care by Janice Cox called "Natural Beauty at Home." It contains more than 250 easy to use recipes for bath, body and hair. My favorite page contains single ingredient facial masks for the time constrained:

Single Ingredient Masks:
1. avocado - cut in half, scoop the fruit part, mash up and apply
2. egg - crack, whip egg, apply
3. plain yogurt - apply
4. strawberries - mash up and apply
5. banana - peel, mash up and apply
6. cucumber - peel with potato peeler, mash up and apply
7. mayonnaise - apply
8. pear - peel, mash up and apply
9. tomato - mash up and apply
Leave mask on face for at least 10 minutes.
Follow up with a steam bath for 15 minutes.
Steam Bath: boil water, put in a large bowl. Put your face over the bowl with a towel over your head to capture the steam.
Then take a take a tepid water shower.

And my last beautiful skin tip:
My husband of nearly 16 years does not seem to mind that I am now 16 years older. He has accepted the fact that people age. He does not mind that I have gray hairs that need to be "covered" every 4 weeks or that I am about 10 pounds heavier that 16 years ago. He looks at me and vehemently denies the existence of wrinkles on my face as if I was imagining things.
A loving, accepting partner may just be the most potent beauty tip of all!
